A24 has dropped the official trailer for A Ghost Story, an upcoming supernatural drama starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara.

It’s certainly a strange one. Affleck plays C, a recently deceased man who returns to his home to console his now widowed wife (Rooney Mara). He soon finds that he has become unstuck in time, destined to watch his wife slip away and the world pass by from his spectral state.

Early reviews have been raving about this one, calling it a beautiful, touching and mesmerising look at the inevitability of time and death. The trailer below certainly grabs the attention, showcasing an interesting aspect ratio and a haunting, ambitious narrative. This one’s moved high on my list of must-watch films.

The film is written and directed by David Lowery, who previously directed Affleck and Mara in Aint’ Them Bodies Saints, was behind last year’s Pete’s Dragon and will be directing Affleck and Robert Redford in a crime-drama titled Old Man and the Gun.

A Ghost Story opens in the US on July 7 and arrives in Australia on July 13.

Synopsis for A Ghost Story:

With A Ghost Story, acclaimed director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal—a wholly-unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
