‘A Hidden Life’ Trailer: A Man Refuses to Fight for Nazis in Terrence Malick’s Latest

20th Century Fox

Three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Terrence Malick appears to be back in critical acclaim with upcoming drama A Hidden Life.

The Australian trailer has arrived for the film, which tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who refused to fight for the Nazis in WWII. August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds, Allied) plays Franz and Valerie Pachner (The Ground Beneath My Feet) plays his wife, Franziska, with a supporting cast that includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz, the latter two of whom put in their final performances here.

It’s been a while since Malick received the type of acclaim seen with films such as Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life, with mixed reviews and reactions given to his last few star-studded features To the Wonder, Knight of Cups and Song to Song. Early word has been very promising for A Hidden Life though, which has been impressing on the festival circuit. The trailer below also bodes well, showing what looks like a beautiful, emotional Malick film that can also – depressingly – be considered timely.

A Hidden Life will open in the US on December 13 and arrives in Australia on January 16, 2020.

Based on real events, A HIDDEN LIFE is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani and children that keeps his spirit alive.
