Warner Bros. is moving ahead with its new version of A Star is Born.
The studio has green lit the remake for a production start in early 2017, and Golden Globe-winning actress Lady Gaga will be on board as the main actress.
Deadline broke the news, reporting that Gaga will also be composing and performing new music for the film, which will mark the directorial debut for the film’s other star, Bradley Cooper.
Beyonce was originally circling the role of female lead, but Gaga soon moved in when things didn’t work out. Apparently Cooper and Gaga won Warner Bros. over thanks to a successful “chemistry test.”
This will mark the fourth time A Star Is Born hits the screens. Janet Gaynor and Fredric March starred in the 1937 original, which earned a Best Writing, Original Story Academy Award. A musical version starring Judy Garland and James Mason followed in 1954, earning six Oscar nominations but going without a win, and 1976 saw Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson lead another remake, giving Streisand a Best Original Song Oscar.
The original tale tells of a young woman who comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, but achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him.
Cooper’s been trying to get this picture off the ground since he was on board Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper.
