The actor has signed up to star in Hustle, a project that was originally at Legendary until Netflix acquired the rights and pitched it to Sandler. The film will have Sandler playing an American basketball scout who is unjustly fired. After he discovers a talented basketball player abroad, he decides to fly the player back home and showcase his skills in the U.S. to prove that they’re both meant to be in the NBA.
There’s no word as to what country the “player abroad” will be from. The project initially had the player being from China, although recent conflicts between the country and the NBA have fueled speculation that the country will be changed.
As reported by Deadline, Hustle will be directed by Jeremiah Zagar (We the Animals) from a screenplay by Oscar-nominated scribe Will Fetters (A Star is Born) and Taylor Materne (NBA 2K20). LeBron James is among the producing team.
Hustle is shaping up to be the next movie for Sandler, who recently impressed with Netflix film Uncut Gems, directed by the Safdie brothers. Scheduling is still up on the air, though, as studios await for clearances from coronavirus-caused shutdowns.
