Disney has announced the cast members set to lead the upcoming live-action adaptation of Aladdin.

As confirmed at D23, this “re-telling” of Disney’s 1992 animated classic will be starring up and comer Mena Massoud in the titular role. Massoud had a role in Nickelodeon series Open Heart, is credited for ‘several voices’ in the video game sequel Watch Dogs 2, and will soon be seen in Amazon’s Jack Ryan television series, which will have John Krasinski playing the Tom Clancy hero.

Playing Jasmin is Naomi Scott, who many may recognise from the recent Power Rangers movie, where she played Kimberly Hart/ the Pink Power Ranger. She’s worked with Disney before, having starred in Disney Channel UK series Life Bites and in the 2011 Disney Channel Original Movie Lemonade Mouth. Her other credits include The 33 and Terra Nova.

And, as has been rumoured since April, Disney confirmed Will Smith will playing Genie. Seeing as the late Robin Williams brought the instantly-lovable character to life with his lively mannerisms and quick wit, Smith has one tough act to follow.

Guy Ritchie, a somewhat surprising choice considering his past credits include Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and this year’s Arthur: Legend of the Sword, is directing from a screenplay by John August (Titan A.E., Big Fish, Corpse Bride). As with Disney’s recent Beauty and the Beast, the new Aladdin will be a live-action musical.

Stay tuned for more on this high-profile redo as it comes to light. Other key roles that need to filled include the villain Jafar, his parrot Iago, and Jasmine’s father the Sultan.
