DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson’s production Appian Way, Endeavor Content and Makeready won a bidding war for rights to the picture, with a plan to develop the remake as star vehicle for DiCaprio – who would be taking on Mikkelsen’s role. Deadline broke the news, reporting that even Jake Gyllenhaal and Elizabeth Banks were among those with production companies giving chase.
Directed by acclaimed Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, The Celebration), Another Round tells of a group of four high school teacher friends who decide to consume alcohol on a daily basis to see how it affects their social and professional lives. The film has been widely lauded (a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score), took the International Feature Oscar, earned Vinterberg a Best Director Oscar nomination, took the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and cleaned up at the Danish Film Awards.
Vinterberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with Tobias Lindholm, appears to be hopeful with having DiCaprio on board on the remake. He said to Indiewire:
“I’ve seen various interpretations of my work before. … It’s an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions. Now it’s in the hands of the finest actor you can get and besides being a brilliant actor, he’s made very intelligent choices throughout his career. I feel there’s a lot of integrity in the choices he’s made. I’m full of hope and curiosity about what they’re up to.”
Regarding whether or not Mikkelsen would be involved, Lindholm was doubtful the actor would even want to be:
“I don’t know if Mads would do such a thing. My first thought would be to make a different interpretation. Asking the same actor to do a different interpretation could be a little bit confusing. But I won’t be the main creative force in this. That would have to be up to the people who end up doing it.”
DiCaprio will next be seen in Don’t Look Up, a star-studded Netflix comedy from Adam McKay (Vice, The Big Short, The Other Guys), with a cast that also includes Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Chris Evans and Mark Rylance, among others.
