Lock it in: Aquaman is a massive hit.

The DC film has officially crossed the $US1 billion mark in worldwide box office receipts. The huge result comes a bit over a month since it opened in its first market, China.

As of now, the Jason Momoa-starring film has made $US1.02 billion worldwide, placing it as the second-highest grossing DC movie ever. And it could become number one. The only DC pic that has grossed more is Christopher Nolan’s trilogy closer The Dark Knight Rises, and that film earned $US1.07 billion in its complete run. This is also by far the most successful film in the DC extended universe; Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is in second place, with a pull of $US873.6 million.

Aquaman‘s international draw ($US732.4 million international, $US287.9 million US domestic) makes it the biggest DC film ever internationally and the second-highest grossing film for studio Warner Bros. It’s also the biggest WB movie ever in China, where it pulled a huge $US287.9 million. As per Box Office Mojo, Aquaman‘s Australian box office result currently stands at an impressive $US19.1 million.

“Firstly, Massive LOVE and THANK YOU to the fans and audiences around the world,” said Aussie director James Wan, who’s had two huge back-to-back hits (Furious 7 earned $US1.57 billion worldwide).

“Humbled by the way you’ve embraced Aquaman and how it has resonated on a global scale. I’ll forever be indebted to Jason for turning Aquaman into one of the coolest, cinematic Super Heroes ever, and becoming the gold standard for this character for generations to come. Huge thank you to the amazing cast—Amber, Patrick, Nicole, Yahya, Willem, Temuera, Dolph, Ludi—for breathing life into our beloved characters. And, of course, this movie wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible achievement of everyone involved, from the heads of department to every single crew member, who demanded utmost excellence in helping design and create this cinematic experience.”

Former Baywatch actor Momoa took to social media to thank fans, filmmaker Zack Snyder, and Wan, posting: “BILLION DOLLAR UNDERDOG. From Baywatch to making what once was the most disrespected superhero into a billion dollar movie. No one gets to the top without the people that love them. My success is from my fans. All my aloha to everyone that had a hand in making this movie. Mahalo Zack for choosing me and mahalo James for creating this beautiful world.”
