Netflix has unveiled a quick-but-enticing announcement trailer for upcoming animated event series Arcane, based in the universe of the hugely popular online multiplayer video game that is League of Legends.
Developed and produced by Riot Games in partnership with Fortiche Productions, Arcane will be set in the utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun. The official logline sates that the plot “follows the origins of two iconic League champions and the power that will tear them apart.” As the slick teaser below showcases, Vi and Jinx are among the main characters.
“League of Legends has inspired global fervour and fandom and we’re thrilled to be the home of the first television series set in this universe, Arcane,” said Director of Original Animation for Netflix Dominique Bazay, clearly teasing much more to come if this does well. “The series promises to be a visually spectacular thrill ride that will have viewers on the edge of their seats.”
Added Shauna Spenley, Global President of Entertainment at Riot Games: “Arcane was created as a love letter to our players and fans, who have been asking us for more cinematic experiences that dive deeper into the worlds and champions in League of Legends. Netflix, with its incredible global brand and shared goal of delivering premium, high quality content, is the perfect partner to help us bring Arcane to players around the globe.”
First released in 2009, League of Legends continues to be one of the world’s most-popular online video games. It’s also the most watched esport around, its League of Legends 2020 World Championship breaking viewership records with over one billion hours of content consumed in total around the world and a final match that reached 45 million Peak Concurrent Users.
The Arcane event series will be streaming on Netflix sometime in late 2021.
