New ‘Artemis Fowl’ Trailer: The Books’ Kid Criminal Becomes a Disney Hero

Walt Disney Studios

A big new trailer has arrived for Artemis Fowl, Disney‘s upcoming adaptation of the beloved fantasy book series by author Eoin Colfer.

The plot follows Artemis, played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw, a 12-year-old descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds. When his father (Colin Farrell) mysteriously disappears, Artemis finds himself on a journey that involves incredible creatures and otherworldly beings. He soon discovers the fate of the world is at stake.

Fans of the books hoping to see something closely in line with what they’ve read may be left wanting with the new trailer, which showcases some very big changes in the page-to-screen translation. Young Artemis appears to be a wide-eyed, mostly-innocent little boy here, embarking on a hero’s origin journey, as opposed to the criminal mastermind anti-hero that evolves over the book series.

The changes in the trailer aren’t being met too kindly by the book’s fans online, so we’ll see if audiences warm to the film and give it a shot when it’s finally released (it was originally scheduled to be released in August, 2019).

For what it’s worth, here’s what author Colfer had to say in a statement, pointing out that he’s cool with the departures from his work:

“Disney and Kenneth Branagh have magically found a way to extract my imagination, mixed in a dollop of Disney magic and projected the enchanted concoction onto the silver screen. I am very excited for audiences to see the film.”

Kenneth Branagh (Thor, Murder On the Orient Express) directs, with a cast that includes Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, and Judi Dench. Artemis Fowl opens in Australian cinemas on May 28 and hits the U.S. on May 29.

Official synopsis for Artemis Fowl:

Disney’s Artemis Fowl, based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.
