Hold on to your seats. The first trailer for the Assassin’s Creed movie has arrived.

Based on the hugely successful Ubisoft video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed sees Michael Fassbender star as Callum Lynch, a man who experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, thanks to a mysterious company and its revolutionary new technology.

The many fans of the video game series will no doubt be pretty excited to see some of that awesome gameplay realised in cinematic form. The trailer is, thankfully, careful not to give away too much, but we’re loving what we do get. Firstly, Michael freakin’ Fassbender looks perfect for the part, and his skill as an actor will no doubt boost proceedings. Secondly, the visuals look gorgeous, as do the frenetic, parkour-style chase scenes. And thirdly, the nods to video game are nicely presented; yep, that leap of faith moment had us nearly cheering.

While we are clearly pretty excited at what could be, it’s important to keep expectations in check. After all, video game adaptations don’t exactly have a history of acing it. Fingers crossed Aussie director Justin Kurzel, who worked with Fassbender on last year’s Macbeth, brings the goods.

Assassin’s Creed, also starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Callum Turner, will hit the U.S. on December 21 and arrive in Australia on January 1, 2017.
