James Cameron has been working on these Avatar sequels for so long it’s been feeling as though we may never see one.
Avatar fans have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the first of four (!) sequels to the highest-grossing film of all time, and it appears we’re one big step closer to seeing the first become a reality.
Cameron has revealed that he has finally finished writing the scripts for Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5, and is actually close to a filming start. Seriously!
Asked by The Daily Beast just how far along Avatar 2 was, Cameron announced that motion capture is scheduled to start in August.
“The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally,” Cameron said.
“I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5. I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now.”
The filmmaker also made no qualms on how he feels about the writing process.
“I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”
The Avatar universe seems to be where Cameron’s feature directing path will stay for the foreseeable future, but could we eventually see the man at the helm of a Star Wars or Marvel film? Don’t count on it. Cameron, whose National Geographic documentary Atlantis Rising premiered on the network on January 29, put it simply: “I’m not the slightest bit interested in laboring in someone else’s house.”
Avatar 2 has been scheduled for US release by Twentieth Century Fox on December 21, 2018, although time will tell if that date is kept. Avatar 3 is expected to arrive late 2020, Avatar 4 late 2022 and Avatar 5 late 2023. We’ll see.
