Close to three months since its release rollout began, the Marvel epic that is Avengers: Endgame has broken the ultimate box office record.

Endgame has officially become the highest grossing film of all time. The film has just crossed $US2.79 billion in worldwide box office receipts, passing the $US2.78 billion that placed James Cameron’s Avatar at the top spot for around a decade.

Endgame came out the gate swinging, breaking opening day records around the globe and racing past the $US1 billion mark in only five days. It would only take it eleven days to cross $US2 billion.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights,” Alan Horn, Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement.

“Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

Avatar and its upcoming sequels, by the way, now belong to Disney following the company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.

“To the greatest fans in the universe, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you,” Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo posted on social media.

James Cameron also responded to the news, congratulating Marvel with a message partly in Avatar‘s Naʼvi language and a picture of Iron Man surrounded by woodsprites, jellyfish-like seeds from the film’s Tree of Souls. The seeds hold ritual importance for the flm’s Na’vi race; the Omaticaya clan plant seeds with the body of a deceased so that their consciousness will become part of the Eywa, the guiding force and deity of Pandora:
