Emma Stone Exits Damien Chazelle’s Hollywood Epic ‘Babylon’; Margot Robbie in Talks to Replace Her

Babylon, the next film from La La Land, First Man and Whiplash filmmaker Damien Chazelle, is having a star change up.

Emma Stone was attached to star alongside Brad Pitt in the picture, but has been forced to exit the film due to scheduling issues. Paramount Pictures and Chazelle aren’t wasting any time, Deadline reporting that Aussie star Margot Robbie has now entered talks to replace Stone in the role. If she signs on, Robbie will be reuniting with Pitt following 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

From a screenplay by Chazelle, Babylon is set around the transition that occurred in Hollywood when the film industry went from silent films to talkies, evolving the filmmaking landscape as talent – in front and behind the screen – were forced to adapt with changing technologies and creative possibilities.

Robbie’s potential role, as per THR, is that of “Clara Bow, the early sex symbol and box office star who was Hollywood’s first “It” girl.” Pitt is reportedly playing “a fictional character, a silent film star who fails to make the transition to the new technology that, sources say, is based on real-life figure John Gilbert.”

As of now, Babylon has a US release date of December 25th, 2021, although that’s more of a tentative plan as the pandemic rages on and continues to affect productions.

Babylon will be produced by Tobey Maguire, Olivia Hamilton, Matt Plouffe, and Marc Platt. Stay tuned as this one comes together.
