Five character posters and a new featurette have been released for the upcoming remake of Ben-Hur.

Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) takes on the titular role that Charlton Heston embodied back in 1959. The classic tale tells of Judah Ben-Hur, a man who is betrayed, stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves, and forced into slavery. Years later, he comes home for vengeance.

While many may be rolling their eyes at the idea of a Ben-Hur remake, it may be of interest to note that the ’59 Oscar winner was in fact a remake of the 1925 silent epic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, which was the second screen adaptation of Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel. The novel was first adapted as a silent short in 1907.

Huston has put in some solid work in the past, even if his projects/roles haven’t exactly given him a chance to shine. It remains to be seen if he can carry a film that, according to the featurette you can find underneath the posters, is “epic, in every sense of the word.”

We’ll also see if director Timur Bekmambetov is right for this project. Bekmambetov’s credits include the Russian fantasy Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch, Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Ben-Hur, also starring Toby Kebbell as Messala, Rodrigo Santoro as Jesus, Morgan Freeman as Ilderim and Nazanin Boniadi as Esther (all pictured below), will hit the U.S. on August 19 and will arrive on Australian screens on August 25.
