NSFW Trailer Arrives for Paul Verhoeven’s Erotic Nun Movie, ‘Benedetta’

The first trailer has arrived for Benedetta, the new film from director Paul Vehoeven – and in what shouldn’t be much of a surprise with the man that gave us such envelope-pushing cinema as RoboCop, Basic Instinct, Total Recall and Showgirls, the trailer is of the not-quite-safe-for-work variety.

The film is based on historian Judith C Brown’s 1986 book Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy, telling the story of Sister Benedetta Carlini, a catholic mystic and lesbian nun who had a relationship with one of her fellow nuns. The story takes place in the late 17th century, as plague ravages Italy. We follow Benedetta (Virginie Efira, who had a role in Vehoeven’s previous film – 2016’s Elle) as she joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous. It all takes a turn, of course, when she meets Bartolomea (Daphné Patakia, Versailles).

The trailer teases a steamy, emotional-looking drama, with what could be quite attention-grabbing role for Efira. Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson and Olivier Rabourdin also star in the film, which Verhoeven co-wrote with his Elle screenwriter David Birke (Slender Man).

Benedetta will be released in France on July 9th and has been selected to screen in competition  at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
