In what’s basically become a genre at this point, the time loop brand of movie has a Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson entry on the way with Boss Level.

The trailer has arrived for the sci-fi action film, which comes from The Grey, Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team and Narc director Joe Carnahan. The film has Grillo (Captain America: Civil War, Wheelman) playing a retired special forces soldier who finds himself trapped in a never-ending time loop of a day that always culminates in him getting killed by assassins. To save his love (played by Naomi Watts), he’s going to have to figure a way out – and that involves taking down the guy who manufactured his predicament, Col. Clive Ventor (Gibson).

This film’s had a bumpy development path over the years. Carnahan had it in the works at 20th Century Fox all the way back in 2012, but it failed to get moving and Fox was eventually out. Nevertheless, Carnahan and Grillo, who both produced the film, persevered and got the funding needed (the eventual budget hit around the $US45 million range) and even lined up quite a notable cast, which also includes Michelle Yeoh, Annabelle Wallis, and Ken Jeong.

The trailer, while showing a little too much plot, showcases what looks like a pretty fun and proudly bonkers ride. Looking forward to it!

Boss Level was picked up by US streamer Hulu for release on March 5th. There’s no Australian release date that we could confirm, although Event Cinemas has it listed for release on February 18th.

Trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder, former special forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) uncovers clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his untimely death. In a race against the clock, Pulver must hunt down Colonel Ventor (Mel Gibson), the powerful head of the government program, while outrunning skilled ruthless assassins determined to keep him from the truth in order to break out of the loop, save his ex-wife (Naomi Watts) and live once again for tomorrow.
