Director Bryan Singer has released a statement referring to what he claims went down with 20th Century Fox and his firing from the set of Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Initial reports alleged that Singer had not returned from set after the Thanksgiving break. Furthermore, there were accusations that he had clashed with lead actor Rami Malek, who’s playing Mercury in the picture, and that Fox had been worried about his behaviour on set due to past incidents.

Well, the X-Men: Days of Future Past director has responded to the firing, claiming that the studio refused to let him see an ill parent and that this “taxing experience” also affected his health.

“With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents. This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control,” Singer said in a statement.

“Rumours that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true. While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving. I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honour the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones, first.”

According to Deadline, Singer’s production company, Bad Hat Harry, is packing up and leaving the 20th Century Fox lot. Singer and the studio had a three-year first look deal that finished on October 31.

A new director is expected to be named shortly. Stay tuned.
