New ‘Bumblebee’ Trailer: Hailee Steinfeld Leads the ‘Transformers’ Spin-Off

Paramount Pictures

Take a look at the big new trailer Paramount Pictures has released for upcoming Transformers spin-off Bumblebee.

We head back to 1987 in this spin-off/prequel, which tells of how and why the titular Autobot came to be on Earth. Hailee Steinfeld plays Charlie, a girl who discovers that her yellow bug is anything but ordinary, and John Cena is on board as military dude on Bumblebee’s tail.

The Transformers cinematic lore looks to get an expansion with the upcoming film, which could be serving as a bit of a franchise reset if things go well. Of course, it’s not just Bumblebee on offer here; Transformers fans, check out snippets of Shatter, Dropkick, Blitzwing, Barricade, Soundwave, and, yep, Optimus Prime on Cybertron.

This is the first live-action Transformers film not to be directed by Michael Bay, who is still on board as producer. At the helm is Travis Knight, who directed stop-motion animated film Kubo and the Two Strings and who serves as President and CEO of Laika Entertainment, the company behind stop-motion feature films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo. The screenplay comes from Christina Hodson, whose previous credits include Shut In and Unforgettable, and who is on board to write DC projects Batgirl and Birds of Prey.

Fingers firmly crossed for this one. Bumblebee, also starring Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, and Pamela Adlon, will be arriving in Australia on December 20 and hitting the US on December 21.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
