‘Captain America: Civil War’ Box Office Earns Big for Disney

Disney is continuing to earn huge numbers at the box office.

As expected, Captain America: Civil War is well and truly smashing the box office at the moment, topping $US678 million worldwide in just under two weeks.

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened to a very impressive $US181.8 million in the U.S. over the weekend, landing the fifth-largest opening weekend ever on domestic soil. Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Universal’s Jurassic World have stronger openings, meaning that four of the top five strongest weekend openers of all time belong to Disney.

The third Cap film will easily surpass total box office numbers taken in by the hero’s two previous solo films. Captain America: The First Avenger earned a total of $US370.5 million during its theatrical run, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier went on to take in an impressive $US714.4 million. With numbers currently coming in at $US678.3 million this early on in Civil War‘s run, the only question now is how soon the film will pass the $US1 billion mark.

Civil War is already the sixth-highest grossing movie in the MCU.  Here are the top five, via Box Office Mojo:

1. Marvel’s The Avengers – $US1.5 billion
2. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $US1.4 billion
3. Iron Man 3 – $US1.2 billion
4. Guardians of the Galaxy – $US773.3 million
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $US714.4 million

It’s another great result for Disney, the studio that recently saw big hits with The Force Awakens (currently the third-highest grossing picture of all time), Zootopia (currently at $US956.4 million worldwide), and The Jungle Book (currently at $US776.1 worldwide). The recent wave of success has pushed Disney to become the fastest studio to ever cross $US3 billion globally.
