Channing Tatum Closes Deal for Gambit Movie

Those excited at the prospect of seeing Channing Tatum playing the card-wielding mutant Gambit can breathe a sigh of relief.

Word spread last week that Tatum may be leaving the project, a surprising development considering just how much he’d worked to get this solo Gambit movie off the ground.

Word is that Tatum has now closed the deal to star as Gambit in the X-Men spinoff film, which is currently set for U.S. release on October 7, 2016.

THR‘s sources confirm that there were indeed issues during the negotiations between 20th Century Fox and Tatum, particularly regarding Tatum’s backend compensation, but that this is “a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking”.

20th Century Fox is most likely looking at a big multi-picture deal with Tatum, with an eye on making Gambit the new anchor for the next wave of X-Men films.

Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine will be hitting the U.S. on March 3, 2017, and Jennifer Lawrence has said that X-Men: Apocalypse will be her last X-Men film, so we can expect Tatum’s Gambit to be pushed as a key player for the next few years.

The first solo Gambit movie will see Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler) directing from a screenplay by Joshua Zetumer, who penned last year’s Robocop remake.
