Channing Tatum is set to play Gambit, the card-wielding mutant from the X-Men comic series.
There have been rumours that Tatum would don the big brown coat for some time now, but confirmation came from X-Men producer Lauren Shuler. When asked by Total Film if Tatum was to play the character, Shuler replied, “Yes…Well you know he’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that. He’s got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie with him. So I think he’ll be great, he’ll be great for Gambit, and he’s a southerner too, he’s not from New Orleans but he is a southerner and he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
Tatum’s first appearance as the character will be in Bryan Singer’s follow-up to X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse. Word is that Tatum’s Gambit will be teased in the film, with a standalone film to follow.
THR’s Borys Kit confirmed the news:
Yes, Channing Tatum will play Gambit. Yes, it will be for a standalone movie. And yes, watch for him to be introduced in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE.

Gambit was previously played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Wolverine is the only X-Men character to have received an official standalone film, but now we can add Gambit and Deadpool to the solo spinoffs. Deadpool is still in the development stage, and has been for some time. Ryan Reynolds is expected to return as Deadpool, with Tim Miller (creative supervisor on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) attached to direct.
Here’s the moment that Total Film managed to get the confirmation that Tatum was our new Gambit:
