Warner Bros. is certainly going big with their planned adaptation of Ernest Cline’s sci-fi novel Ready Player One.

The Tracking Board is reporting that WB has offered Christopher Nolan directing duties, while Ain’t It Cool says Matthew Vaughn, Edgar Wright, Peter Jackson and Robert Zemeckis are currently being eyed as well. Apparently Zemeckis (Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, Cast Away) is the studio’s favourite to take the reins.

Ready Player One tells of a teenage boy who, in the year 2044, enters a virtual utopia known as the OASIS. He embarks on an elaborate treasure hunt to win the fortune left behind in the will of OASIS’ creator, finding himself up against powerful corporations and competitors.

Zak Penn, known for co-writing Behind Enemy Lines, X2, Elektra and The Avengers, has written the project’s most recent screenplay. The first draft was penned by author Ernest Cline (Fanboys) and Eric Eason (A Better Life).

That’s one impressive group of directors currently being looked at by WB. There’s no word as yet from any of them, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything…
