The first images have been unveiled of The Mercy, the upcoming film starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.
The Mercy, which was at one point titled Deep Water, tells the true story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who attempted to win the first non-stop single-handed round-the-world yacht race in 1968. The story of Crowhurst’s dangerous solo voyage and the struggles he confronted on the epic journey while his wife Claire (Weisz) and children waited for his return at home is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times.
The Mercy marks the latest film from Academy Award winning director James Marsh, who took Eddie Redmayne to an Oscar win with the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion) is behind the screenplay.
Crowhurst’s ill-fated voyage could prove to be the right backbone for a strong picture. Marsh has proven himself a strong filmmaker, especially with real-life stories (he also directed acclaimed docos Man on Wire and Project Nim), and Firth’s skills as a performer may very well give the picture added value. With a team like this and a dramatic narrative to bring to life, it’s no wonder awards buzz is already circling.
