Community fans, you may want to sit down. Community is officially coming back. Yes, the 5-season-running NBC comedy series is set to continue, with word coming through that Yahoo Screen has ordered the sixth season. The show’s cast contracts were to expire tonight, so talk about cutting it close!
Things weren’t looking good for the series when negotiations with Hulu fell apart last week. Fans will be cheering at Sony’s unwavering determination to sell the show to a new network, and who would have thought it’d be Yahoo?
So, who’s coming back? Apparently, everyone. The whole cast is reportedly returning to continue the series, as is creator Dan Harmon.
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” Harmon said in a statement. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
Community has developed a seriously strong fan base over the years, one that pushed Sony to continue to shop the series once NBC cancelled it. The question that these fans will now be asking: Does #SixSeasonsAndAMovie stand a chance? Maybe.
“I would have thought that NBC cancelling the show would have been the ending,” Zack Van Amburg, president of programming and production at Sony Pictures Television, told EW.com. “I’ve learned to take it one step at a time. We’re really excited about this sixth season. Beyond that, we will have to see what reveals itself.”
Season six of Community, containing 13 episodes, will premiere on Yahoo Screen this fall (U.S. season).
