‘Cry Macho’ Trailer: Clint Eastwood Crosses the Border in Emotional Drama

Warner Bros. Pictures

Take a look at the trailer that’s arrived for Cry Macho, the latest film with Clint Eastwood as both star and director.

The film is set in 1979 and has Eastwood playing one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder Mike Milo, who accepts a job from an ex-boss to head into Mexico and bring back the man’s young son (Eduardo Minett). As the pair are forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, their unexpectedly challenging journey gives the world-weary horseman a chance to forge unexpected connections and discover his own sense of redemption.

It’s undeniably impressive. At 91 years of age, Eastwood simply isn’t slowing down; this is his seventh film as director in the past eight years. With Cry Macho, he looks to be tapping into the vein of his 2008 picture Gran Torino, where he also played a grizzled older man on a path of redemption thanks to his friendship with a younger man from a different cultural background. It’s a sweet trailer, given oomph with Ennio Morricone’s beautiful score from 1986 film The Mission (Cry Macho’s original score comes from Moana and Tarzan composer Mark Mancina).

Interestingly, attempts to adapt N. Richard Nash’s book of the same name have been going on since the novel was published in 1975, with Eastwood once attached to take on the role but forced to leave it for Dirty Harry film The Dead Pool. Stars such as Roy Scheider, Burt Lancaster, Pierce Brosnan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger also circled the project at one point or another over the years. The book itself was written by Nash after his Cry Macho screenplay failed to get picked up by Hollywood. Sadly, Nash passed in 2000 and was unable to see his story hit the screen. Well, it must have always struck a chord with Eastwood. After all these years, he returns to it, working from a screenplay co-written by Nick Schenk, who penned previous Eastwood pics Gran Torino and The Mule.

Also starring Natalia Traven (Collateral Damage), Dwight Yoakam (Logan Lucky), Fernanda Urrejola (Narcos: Mexico), and Horacio Garcia-Rojas (Narcos: Mexico), Cry Macho will be hitting US cinemas and HBO Max on September 17th. In Australia, the film opens in cinemas on November 4th.
