Dench and Coogan Shine in Philomena Trailer

A US theatrical trailer has been released for Philomena, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen), the film tells the true story of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), an Irish woman seeking the illegitimate son she was forced to put up for adoption. Steve Coogan plays Martin Sixsmith, a BBC journalist in need of a good story that decides to help Philomena on her search.

Judi Dench has always been a fine talent and it looks as though she gives another great turn here. Coogan certainly appears to deliver a perfect balance of comedy and seriousness as an out of luck reporter. Their combination looks inspired and early reviews have this pegged to at least receive some Academy nominations. Fingers crossed it’s as good as it looks.

Here’s the official synopsis for Philomena:

Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, this film focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock — something Philomena’s Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of — and given away for adoption in the United States. Following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into her son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Philomena meets Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to track down her long-lost son.
