Well, not for a lack of a trying, it looks like James Gunn won’t be rehired by Disney.

It’s been nearly a month since the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker was let go by Disney as a result of past tweets from almost 10 years ago resurfaced. The inappropriate tweets were jokes that touched on rape and pedophilia, and Disney was quick to remove the director once they came to light.

The cast of Guardians – including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper – were among the many that have come out in support, even releasing a joint statement where they said they were “encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3.” The cast’s outspoken support led Marvel to reportedly push Disney to reinstate Gunn, but those sit-downs were called “a long shot.”

Long shot indeed. According to Variety, the folks at Disney have decided to stand firm in their decision. The site is reporting that Gunn met with Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, who apparently took the meeting “only as a courtesy to clear the air with Gunn.” The meeting was reportedly calm, with Horn firmly holding the decision to terminate Gunn.

It has been rumoured that Marvel president Kevin Feige has been asking for Gunn to be rehired. He wasn’t part of the meeting and is said to nevertheless be standing by Disney’s move.

Disney-Marvel will no doubt now be searching quickly to find a new director for Vol. 3, which – so far – has a screenplay written by Gunn.

Regarding Gunn’s future career, it doesn’t look like he’ll need to worry. The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month reported that “major players,” such as Warner Bros., were keen to work with Gunn once this Disney cloud has passed. Stay tuned; he could be working on DC film soon.
