“Don’t cast that spell.” Well, the Doc (Benedict Cumberbatch, continuing in the role) can’t say he wasn’t warned. The second Doctor Strange-led MCU film finds our Marvel wizard dealing with a multiverse in disarray, following the events of, specifically, No Way Home, Disney+ animated series What If?, and Disney+ series WandaVision.
For a first trailer, there’s a good amount on offer here. Stephen requests the help of one Wanda Romanoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who you can imagine has gathered an insane amount of power after WandaVision closed with her studying the ancient book of spells, the Darkhold; there’s a flash of Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) walking down the aisle; Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns with condolences as he takes on Strange; and Strange comes face to face with an evil version of himself. The latter, we met in the fantastic fourth episode of What If?, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”
This chapter brings in filmmaker Sam Raimi (the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, The Evil Dead) to the MCU, directing from a screenplay by Loki series creator Michael Waldron and Jade Halley Bartlett.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, also starring Benedict Wong and Xochitl Gomez, will open in Australian cinemas on May 5th and U.S. cinemas on May 6th, 2022.
