Netflix has unveiled the official teaser trailer for all-star comedy Don’t Look Up, boasting a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill and more.
From writer-director Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice, Anchorman), Don’t Look Up tells of what unfolds when two low-level astronomers (played by DiCaprio and Lawrence) embark on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet earth. It’s a big deal, but… convincing everyone else it is will be a whole other matter.
McKay has gathered himself a lot of talent for his latest comedic satire, which looks to have politics and the media firmly in its sights. He’s been on a roll with The Big Short (which earned McKay a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar), Vice, and HBO series Succession (which he exec produces and directed an episode for) – and this could extend that streak nicely. Fingers crossed this is as grand as it has the potential to be.
We’ll find out when Don’t Look Up, which also stars Tyler Perry, Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Chiklis and Tomer Sisley, hits Netflix on December 24th. The film will first open in select US cinemas on December 10th.
Official synopsis for Don’t Look Up:
Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical — what will it take to get the world to just look up?!
