Elle Fanning, fresh off a starring turn in Disney’s successful villain-focused outing Maleficent, is to play the author of Frankenstein. The actress will star in A Storm in the Stars, a period romantic drama directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour.

THR reports that A Storm in the Stars, written by newcomer Emma Jensen, is to tell “the story of the passionate love affair between dangerously charismatic poet Percy Shelley and 17-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft (Fanning), who would a year later write Frankenstein as Mary Shelley.”

This will mark the first English-language film from director Haifaa Al-Mansour, who became the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia with her film Wadjda. This should be the perfect material for Al-Mansour to tackle, since both Wadjda and A Storm in the Stars deal with a young woman who stands out in her time and culture.

Producer Amy Baer (Last Vegas) spoke on Fanning’s casting, saying, “Elle is amazingly smart and talented and very much relates to Mary as a young woman. She is going to do something extraordinary in this role that will transition her from a compelling young adult to a formidable leading lady.”

Once the project secures the necessary finances, shooting will commence in 2015.
