Emile Hirsch is set to star as John Belushi in an upcoming biopic. The 28-year-old actor is set to star in a film scripted and directed by Steve Conrad (writer of The Pursuit of Happyness) , based on the Judith Belushi Pisano and Tanner Colby book Belushi.
Deadline has reported that the film is to cover John Belushi’s life and death. After a run of success on Saturday Night Live and in films such as Animal House and The Blues Brothers, Belushi met his untimely death at age 33. His death was due to an injection of cocaine and heroin, known as a “speedball”.
Michael Chiklis, best known for his lead role in TV’s The Shield, previously starred as Belushi in a 1989 biopic titled Wired. Apparently, Belushi’s widow didn’t embrace the film – nor did audiences. She is involved in this new version.
Belushi’s past comic partner Dan Aykroyd is exec producing the new film, with Alexandra Milchan, Bonnie Timmerman, Film 360′s Scott Lambert and Judy Belushi Pisano.
Hirsch is a fine actor that doesn’t often get to stand in the spotlight, often starring as a supporting character. But those that have seen him in Sean Penn’s Into the Wild know exactly what he’s capable of. We’re looking forward to seeing what he does with this iconic persona.
The film is set to start shooting next spring (U.S. season) in New York.
