‘Encanto’ Trailer: Disney’s Colombia-Set Fantasy Features Music from Lin-Manuel Miranda

Disney has released a big new trailer for Encanto, the studio’s upcoming animated family film set in a magical Colombia.

The story tells of the Madrigal family. Living hidden in the mountains of Colombia, the family has been blessed with the magic of their vibrant, wondrous town, Encanto. Every child in the family has been given a special power; even the house itself is magical! Magic all round, it seems, except for one Madrigal child, Mirabel (voiced by Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz). But, when Mirabel discovers that the magic of Encanto is in danger, she might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

This gorgeous-looking adventure is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, who were behind Disney’s Oscar-winning 2016 film Zootopia, and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (whose credits include co-writing episodes of The Haunting of Hill House and The Exorcist). Bush and Smith wrote the screenplay, with nominated Hamilton star/creator Lin-Manuel Miranda writing the music. Miranda also wrote music for Disney’s 2016 Polynesian adventure, Moana.

María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, and Mauro Castillo are among the voice cast. And, as announced today, John Leguizamo is also on board as Mirabel’s future-seeing uncle – and he’s going to have a few bars to deliver.

“I was so pumped to be asked to the party,” Leguizamo said in a statement. “Lin-Manuel wrote me a rap, and I flipped out! Plus, this is such a beautiful story set in Colombia. It’s a first in so many ways. The magic is enchanting, the comedy is so sharp, and the world created is irresistible.”

Encanto will be hitting US cinemas on November 24th and Australian cinemas on December 2nd. A Disney+ streaming release will follow on Christmas Eve.
