The first trailer has dropped for Flatliners, an Ellen Page-led remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-fi horror film.
Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons star in this slick-looking, and perhaps overly familiar, redo, which tells the story of five med students who begin experimenting with near-death experiences by essentially dying for short periods of time and coming back. Of course, you can’t step to the other side and return without bringing anything back.
Danish helmer Niels Arden Oplev, known for 2009’s Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directs from a screenplay by Source Code scribe Ben Ripley.
“We viewed the original movie as a jumping-off point – and are now telling a re-imagined story with new characters,” producer Michael Douglas, yes that Michael Douglas, told Fandango.
“We have learned more and more about the world, and science keeps answering so many questions and taking us to so many previously unexplored places – but still no one knows what happens after we die. That’s a question we’ll be asking ourselves forever.”
Flatliners, which also stars Kiefer Sutherland (apparently not reprising the exact same role from the original), will arrive in Australia on September 28 and opens in the U.S. on September 29.
Synopsis for Flatliners:
In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.
