Another reminder that there’s a ‘Ryan Reynolds in a video game’ movie that’s been circling a release for over a year now.
A new trailer has arrived for Free Guy, the sci-fi action-comedy that was set for release in July 2020, then December 2020, then May 2021. It now appears that we have the final release date: August 12th in Australia and August 13th in the US.
Directed by Shawn Levy (director of the Night at the Museum trilogy, executive producer of Stranger Things), Free Guy has Reynolds playing a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game. He decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.
The cast includes Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The screenplay comes from Matt Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles) and Zak Penn (Ready Player One).
Some fun new bits of footage shown off below. Let’s hope the latest release date sticks!
