Fans of both Channing Tatum and the X-Men character Gambit may have something to worry about here.
According The Wrap‘s insiders, the deal that would see Tatum playing the character “is in jeopardy of falling apart and he is planning to exit”.
There’s no official word from 20th Century Fox and there aren’t any details on what the exact issues may be, only that “something is up”.
Tatum is also attached to produce the film, which is to be helmed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt.
It’s certainly a surprising turn of events, assuming there’s truth in the story, especially when you consider just how much of a hand Tatum has had in getting the project off the ground. Neither Tatum nor longtime producing partner Reid Carolin have released a statement as yet.
If Tatum does drop out, the race will be on for 20th Century Fox to find a new lead. The project currently has a planned U.S. release date of October 7, 2017, but that may be reworked if casting issues come to fruition.
Tatum’s recent film Magic Mike XXL recently topped $101 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $14.8 million (according to Box Office Mojo). The actor will next be seen in Hail, Caesar!, the upcoming film by the Coen brothers.
