Sony has unveiled the first trailer for the female-driven Ghostbusters reboot, which sees Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones making up the titular team.
Our first official look at the movie drives home almost exactly what you would expect from a Ghostbusters reboot directed and co-written by Paul Feig. The internet is already screaming that it’s Bridesmaids with ghosts, which isn’t necessarily a terrible thing when you consider how successful a comedy Bridesmaids was.
The leads seem to be having fun. McCarthy and Wiig do their thing, while McKinnon and Jones are given a strong opportunity to expand their Saturday Night Live-focused careers. Yet, it’s our look at the overall film itself that puts up a few question marks. It’s clear that the film is trying its best to emulate the look and tone of the original film, complete with very familiar ghosts, but the collision between the old-school classic and the comedic stylings of our four leads doesn’t quite seem to gel. Fingers crossed this doesn’t come across as an extended SNL-skit. Then again, this is just the film’s first trailer. We’ll see.
Ghostbusters, also starring Chris Hemsworth, hits U.S. cinemas on July 15.
