Donald Glover has scored himself quite the gig.
Lucasfilm has announced that Glover will indeed be playing a young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film.
Directed by The Lego Movie and 21/22 Jump Street helmers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the still-untitled picture will be focusing on a young Han Solo, played by Hail, Caesar! standout Alden Ehrenreich.
According to the press release:
Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich — previously cast as Han Solo — in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” Lord and Miller said in a statement. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Glover has had quite the creative path already, putting in a memorable turn in four season of Community, putting in a bit of work as a stand-up comedian, and balancing a side career as a Grammy-nominated artist – known by his artist name, Childish Gambino. Glover, who can also be seen in his FX series Atlanta (a show he has created, co-writes and executive produces), will also have a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film is scheduled for US release May 25, 2018.
