‘Hellraiser’ Reboot Finishes Filming, New Pinhead to Be Actress Jamie Clayton

Production has wrapped on Hellraiser, a reboot of the horror film franchise that began with the 1987 film from writer-director Clive Barker (who adapted his own novel, The Hellbound Heart).

Spyglass Media Group and Hulu have confirmed the cast of the new film, which will be heading to streaming service Hulu in the US. Directing the film is David Bruckner, who previously directed horror films The Night House and The Ritual. The screenplay comes from Luke Piotrowski and Ben Collins, who penned Bruckner’s The Night House and 2017 film Super Dark Times. Batman Begins and Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer came up with the story and is also attached as producer.

The film will star Sense8 and The L Word: Generation Q actress Jamie Clayton as the new iteration of Pinhead, marking the first time an actress and transgender person has played the extra-dimensional, demonic being known as a Cenobite. Doug Bradley previously played the character in eight Hellraiser films.

In casting an actress in the role, the reboot is going back to the source material. Barker’s original novel, The Hellbound Heart, described the Cenobite as almost genderless, albeit with a feminine lean. “Its voice, unlike that of its companion, was light and breathy–the voice of an excited girl,” reads an excerpt from the book. A female Pinhead is also depicted in the Hellraiser comic book series from Boom! Studios.

The cast of the film also includes Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Goran Visnjic (The Boys), Odessa A’zion (Grand Army), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Adam Faison (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), Aoife Hinds (Normal People), Selina Lo (Boss Level), and Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049).

Barker, who has now come on board the project as a producer, has given the new film his blessing. “Having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new Hellraiser film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before,” Barker said in a statement. “This is a Hellraiser on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honour the original even as they revolutionise it for a new generation.”

Said director Bruckner: “It’s been such an honour to have Clive onboard to help support and shepherd us through the incredible universe he created so long ago. Combined with a fearless and committed cast, including the amazing Jamie Clayton, who fully embodies the role as the Hell Priest, we’re aiming to create a very special new chapter in the Hellraiser legacy.”

The new Hellraiser will be hitting Hulu sometime in 2022.
