A24 has dropped the official trailer for upcoming horror-thriller Hereditary, and it’s a doozy.
The feature debut for short film writer-director Ari Aster, Hereditary tells of what unfolds after the matriarch of the Graham family passes away: It doesn’t take long for her daughter’s (Toni Collette) family to start uncovering cryptic and terrifying secrets about their ancestry.
This film shook up Sundance earlier this year, earning rave reviews for its highly unsettling atmosphere and stand-out direction. If you pay attention to aggregate scores, then it’s worth noting that, at the time of writing, the film boasts a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89 score on Metacritic. The critics clearly love it, and the trailer below hints at why.
Hereditary, also starring Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne, will be hitting U.S. cinemas on June 8.
Official synopsis for Hereditary:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
