Golden Globe winner Idris Elba will going head to head with tough guys Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Talk about a badass trio of leading men. The Fast & Furious spinoff film Hobbs and Shaw will find Johnson and Statham teaming up again in their titular roles, and they’ll be taking on Elba this time around. Variety broke the news, reporting that Elba will be playing “the main villain.”
“He’s bad, but I’m dangerous,” Johnson posted on Instagram. “Welcome my brotha @idriselba with tattooed and open arms to our #HobbsAndShaw Fast & Furious spin-off movie. For years we’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to work together and this film is the perfect one. Every great hero needs an even greater villain. Cue the music… I’ve been waiting… let’s dance”
Charlize Theron played by the villain Cipher in the most recent entry, The Fate of the Furious, and has been rumoured to be returning in this spinoff, although there’s been no update on that front. Johnson, Statham, Elba and Theron? That would be great. We’ll see.
This marks another high-profile antagonistic role for Elba, having played Krall in Star Trek: Beyond, terrorised Taraji P. Henson in No Good Deed, and voiced Shere Khan in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. Charliz
Hobbs and Shaw will begin filming later this year, with Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch at the helm. The script comes from Chris Morgan, who’s steered the franchise since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
As of now, Hobbs and Shaw is scheduled to open in US cinemas on July 26, 2019 and Australian cinemas on August 1, 2019. Fast & Furious 9, by the way, will be heading into US cinemas on April 10, 2020.
