Antonio Banderas is a surprise addition to the long-awaited next Indiana Jones movie.
Filming is currently underway on the franchise’s still-untitled fifth film, which will bring back Harrison Ford as the iconic archaeologist/adventurer and feature a line-up that includes Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann and Shaunette Renée Wilson.
Deadline broke the news of Banderas’ casting, although didn’t have any info to share as to who the actor will be playing. Overall plot details are also still being kept under wraps.
Cameras are now rolling in London, with director James Mangold (Logan, Walk the Line, Ford v Ferrari) working from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. Steven Spielberg had been attached to continue at the helm of the franchise’s next chapter for quite a while before stepping aside for Mangold, although he remains attached to the project as executive producer.
Banderas’ recent credits include Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory (which earned him his first Oscar nomination) and action-comedy sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. The Spanish star has a number of big-name projects on the way; apart from Indiana Jones 5, Banderas’ pipeline includes video game adaptation Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, and a return as the voice of the Shrek universe’s sword-wielding feline in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Indy 5 is currently scheduled to hit Australian cinemas on July 28th and US cinemas on July 29th, 2022.
