‘Interceptor’: Aussie Author Matthew Reilly to Direct Netflix Action Movie with Luke Bracey & Elsa Pataky in NSW

Bestselling Aussie author Matthew Reilly is making his feature directorial debut with a Netflix action-drama – and he’s got his leads lined up.

Australian actor Luke Bracey (Point Break, Hacksaw Ridge) and Spanish actress Elsa Pataky (The Fast and the Furious franchise, Tidelands) have signed up to star in Interceptor, a film that will be shot in New South Wales, Australia.

The plot will follow an Army lieutenant who must utilise her years of tactical training and military expertise to save humanity when sixteen nuclear missiles are launched at the US. If that isn’t enough, a violent coordinated attack simultaneously threatens her remote missile interceptor station.

Reilly wrote the screenplay with Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie, whose credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Collateral, Tomorrow, When the War Began and Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.

“As those people who have read my novels know, I love telling big action stories that are told at a frenetic pace,” Reilly said in a statement. “I wanted to bring that kind of rocket-fast, relentless, high-stakes storytelling to film, and so Interceptor was born. Elsa is just perfect as our lead: a strong, independent and determined woman who, in the face of overwhelming odds, just refuses to give up.”

Said NSW Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin: “Securing Netflix’s Interceptor is further proof that NSW’s screen industry is taking off, boosting our economy and creating jobs as international productions seek out the winning combination of highly skilled cast and crew, technical ability, competitiveness and creativity. As we put the world on notice that NSW is a global leader in film, it’s fitting that this action-blockbuster will once again showcase NSW’s production, CGI and VFX prowess.”

Beattie will be on board as producer, as will Matthew Street and Michael Boughen via the Ambience Entertainment banner. Chris Hemsworth (also Pataky’s husband) is on board to executive produce with Kathy Morgan, Christopher Mapp, Robert Slaviero and Peter D. Graves.

As author, Reilly’s popular books include Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves, Seven Ancient Wonders, and The Tournament, among many others. As a longtime fan of his books, count this writer as one very keen to see what unfolds here.
