Jack Black and Tim Robbins are set to star in a new comedy pilot for HBO called The Brink. Deadline has reported that Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) will be directing the pilot episode.
The Brink will be a political comedy, telling the story of “U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Robbins), a man of big appetites and little patience for the war mongers in the Situation Room; Coppins (Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer reluctantly caught on the ground in the middle of it all; and ace Navy fighter pilot Zeke Callahan.” These three individuals must “pull through the chaos around them” in order to prevent World War 3 from breaking out. The role of the Navy fighter hasn’t been cast yet.
The screenplay has been written by Roberto Benabib, who worked as a writer and executive producer on Showtime’s Weeds.
This is probably a smart move from both Black and Robbins. Neither of them have been in anything substantial of late, and HBO is one of television’s leading makers of quality television. Described as an “epic dark comedy focusing on a geopolitical crisis”, this has the potential to be a timely, well-written show with humour and brains. Time will tell.
