Jake Gyllenhaal will be starring in a heist thriller titled Cut and Run.

New Republic Pictures has managed to acquire the rights to the spec script (a non-commissioned screenplay, with a focus on story and not on camera and directing aspects) in a competitive bidding war. The project has Gyllenhaal on board to both star in and produce via his Nine Stories Productions banner.

Cut and Run will follow a group of thieves who target superyachts and use high-powered speed boats to execute their heists. Their run takes a turn when they steal the wrong thing, placing them in the sights of the wrong people.

The spec script was penned by John Glenn (Eagle Eye), who will also be producing along with New Republic founder Brian Oliver and president Bradley Fischer.

This marks another New Republic project for Gyllenhaal following the first-look deal Nine Stories signed with the company. They also have Oblivion Song on the way, based on the comic book by Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici.

Gyllenhaal’s upcoming credits include Michael Bay getaway actioner Ambulance and Guy Ritchie Afghanistan action-thriller The Interpreter.
