Jake Gyllenhaal has signed up to star in Studio 8’s Prophet, based on the character and comic books from Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld.
The Image Comics character first appeared on the page in Youngblood #2 (July 1992) and has since been the star of three ongoing comic book series bearing his name. Gyllenhaal will be playing John Prophet, a man who, towards the end of WWII, decides to volunteer for a German experiment in order to feed his family. The scientific experiments give him superhuman strength, although any superhero action gets put on hold when a bombing leaves him trapped underground for two decades. He awakens in 1965, entering a world that’s moved on and with a daughter that now resents him. Oh, and the KGB wants his blood to create super-soldiers.
On board to direct the film is Sam Hargrave, the stuntman/stunt coordinator turned filmmaker who had quite the hit with his directorial debut, 2020 Chris Hemsworth actioner Extraction. The screenplay is written by Marc Guggenheim, whose many credits include CW DC shows such as Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, as well as Netflix’s Trollhunters universe.
“It’s been a goal of ours to work with Jake and Sam for quite some time, so we’re very excited to finally be collaborating with them on this unique, action-packed genre film,” said Studio 8 CEO Jeff Robinov, on board to produce with Studio 8’s John Graham, Adrian Askarieh (Hitman: Agent 47), Brooklyn Weaver (Run All Night), and creator Liefeld.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what they envision for bringing this story to life — a story we’re sure will stand out in the comic book world as a powerful, emotionally charged and visually distinctive film.”
Gyllenhaal can be seen in the recently released Netflix thriller The Guilty and is leading upcoming Michael Bay-directed actioner Ambulance, also starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González. Hargrave is also attached to direct Extraction 2, with Hemsworth back on board as badass mercenary Tyler Rake.
Robinov’s Studio 8 is currently in production on a Ben Affleck-starring action-thriller titled Hypnotic, with Robert Rodriguez directing.
