Academy Award winner Jared Leto could be starring in a Tron movie for Disney.
A follow-up to Tron: Legacy, itself a sequel to Disney’s 1982 sci-fi film, was being planned for sometime but was eventually canned in 2015. Well, it appears the franchise ain’t done just yet.
According to THR, Jared Leto is on board to produce and possibly star in a Tron film. It’s very early days on the project, but word is that Tron: Legacy co-producer Justin Springer is looking at continuing on the franchise with Leto and Leto’s producing partner, Emma Ludbrook, potentially attached to produce as well. No director and writer has been mentioned.
Although the third Tron is not believed to be a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy, it does have strong connections. As THR reports, the possible new film…
….is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared onscreen before, but was a key player in that script.
Tron: Legacy received mixed reviews from critics but was nevertheless successful. The film earned $US400 million worldwide from a production budget of $US170 million.
Next up for Leto is The Outsider, which sees him playing an American former G.I. who joins the yakuza, and the highly anticipated sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049. The latter hits US cinemas on October 6.
