Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway have signed up to star in a psychological thriller titled Mothers’ Instinct, a remake of 2018 Belgian film Duelles, itself based on a novel by Barbara Abel. We’ve got the trailer for that one below.
The original film’s director and co-writer, Olivier Masset-Depasse, will again be directing, this time from an English-language screenplay adaptation by Sarah Conradt (50 States of Fright).
As reported by Deadline, the film will be set in the 1960s and will have Chastain and Hathaway playing neighbours and best friends who lead similarly idyllic lives, with successful husbands and sons of the same age. Everything takes a turn following a tragic accident, shattering the harmony between the two women and leading to a battle of wills as guilt, suspicion and paranoia rise to the surface.
“It takes actors of Jessica and Anne’s caliber to communicate the intricacy of these two roles,” Masset-Depasse said in a statement. “The relationship between a mother and child is the most powerful connection between two human beings. When this bond is severed, it calls into question conventional morality and even sanity. In the behind-closed-doors atmosphere of 1960’s America, Mothers’ Instinct becomes a terrifying, high-pressure powder keg.”
The 2018 film was highly acclaimed in Belgium, winning a record nine awards at the Magritte Awards (considered the country’s equivalent of the Academy Awards), including Best Film, Director, Actress and Script.
Chastain will soon be seen kicking ass in spy action-thriller The 355 and playing a real-life televangelist in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Hathaway can be seen as The Grand High Witch in the Amazon-released The Witches and is currently filming Lockdown, a heist comedy with Ben Stiller.
