Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver will be starring in an upcoming film from Paul Schrader, the Taxi Driver and Raging Bull scribe and First Reformed director who has Oscar Isaac thriller The Card Counter set for release shortly.
The project is Master Gardener, a crime thriller both written and to be directed by Schrader. The film’s plot will find Edgerton playing a meticulous horticulturist who takes care of the grounds of his employer’s beautiful estate. Weaver plays his employer, a wealthy dowager, who demands that he take on her troubled great niece. Before long, secrets from his buried violent past come to the surface.
“Master Gardener is the natural successor to the brilliant film The Card Counter,” HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart said to Deadline, the outlet that broke the news. “Character-driven, sexy and surprising, with plenty of intrigue one would expect from a Schrader film.”
The film is to be produced by Scott LaStaiti, David Gonzales, and Kojo Studios’ Amanda Crittenden. Luisa Law will be executive producing alongside Kojo’s’ Linda Ujuk and Dale Roberts.
Cameras on Master Gardener are expected to begin rolling in early 2022.
Edgerton’s upcoming credits include Ron Howard’s Thailand cave rescue film Thirteen Lives and Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Weaver will be reuniting with her Dave and The Ice Storm co-star Kevin Kline in the comedy The Good House and has at least four Avatar movies on the way.
