Donnie Yen Joining Keanu Reeves in ‘John Wick 4’

John Wick: Chapter 4 has added Hong Kong Chinese superstar Donnie Yen (Ip Man franchise, Rogue One) to the cast.

The next film in the Keanu Reeves-starring action franchise will find Yen playing an old friend of Wick’s, sharing a similar history – along with many of the same enemies. From the sounds of it, we’re going to see both Reeves and Yen taking on baddies together.

Deadline broke the news of Yen’s casting, as well as the addition of Japanese-British pop superstar Rina Sawayama. Details of her role are being kept under wraps.

“We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise,” said director Chad Stahelski, staying at the helm of the franchise after directing the first three films. “I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role.”

Added producer Basil Iwanyk: “Donnie Yen will bring a vibrant and powerful energy to the franchise. We were determined to bring him on board to John Wick 4 and are thrilled for the opportunity to have such a major talent to collaborate with Keanu.”

This will be the first John Wick movie without screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who created the characters. Writing the fourth film are Shay Hatten (co-writer of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead) and Michael Finch (Predators, American Assassin).

The three John Wick films were well received by both critics and audiences and all proved to be box office winners, raking in over $US587 million in worldwide ticket sales combined.

Also ahead for Reeves: The Matrix 4, set to be released this December.
