He protected the U.S. President during his run as Jack Bauer in 24, but now Kiefer Sutherland is set to play the American Chief of State in an upcoming ABC series.
Sutherland has been cast as the President in Designated Survivor, a conspiracy thriller-drama that has received a straight-to-series order by ABC. Deadline broke the news, reporting that the project was the target of a major bidding war before ABC rose victorious.
Designated Survivor comes with Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) on board as executive producer and a spec script by Safe House scribe David Guggenheim.
The series sees Sutherland playing a U.S. Cabinet member who is suddenly made President when an attack during the State of the Union kills those above him in the Presidential line of succession. Deadline describes the series as “a family drama wrapped around a conspiracy thriller about an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation.”
Guggenheim’s screenplay credits also include the Nicolas Cage-starring thriller Stolen, the upcoming Safe House sequel, the long-gestating Bad Boys 3, and a reboot of Commando.
